The History of Lögmál ehf.

The Lögmál ehf law office traces its history back to 1986.  

A law office of this name was originally established at the beginning of 1987 by the Supreme Court lawyers Óskar Magnússon and Ásgeir Þór Árnason. On 1 January 2001 Lögmál ehf merged with the law office Lögrún s/f, established in 1986 by the Supreme Court lawyers Hjalti Steinþórsson and Elvar Örn Unnsteinsson. Upon the merger, the partners of both offices at the time, Supreme Court lawyers Ásgeir Þór Árnason, Elvar Örn Unnsteinsson, Lúðvík Örn Steinarsson and Magnús Guðlaugsson, became equal partners of Lögmál ehf. Since the merger the office has been located at Skólavörðustígur 12 in Reykjavík.  

On 1 February 2013, Supreme Court lawyer Magnús Óskarsson, LL.M., Esq., became a partner of the office. Magnús Guðlaugsson sold his part of the company in 2017 and left the office. In 2022, Elvar Örn Unnsteinsson also sold his part in the company and left the office. In 2023, lawyer Einar Oddur Sigurðsson and Supreme Court lawyer Unnsteinn Örn Elvarsson, LL.M., became new partners.

Confidentiality and Document Management

A legal representative shall never, in the absence of a final court decision rendered with respect to the representative personally, or an unequivocal provision of law, provide any unauthorized person with any documents, data or information obtained by the legal representative in the course of work for a client or an erstwhile client.  

This also applies to a legal representative´s assistant and other staff, as well as to a partner in a law office and the partner’s staff.  

Upon the request of a client a legal representative may however disclose documents, data or information if this is obviously in the client’s interest. The duty of confidentiality remains in effect when an assignment has been completed.
